To address the myriad challenges posed by “new morbidities” central to Developmental-Behavioral Pediatrics (DBP) including caring for children with autism and developmental disabilities (A/DD) and to achieve Healthy People 2020 objectives for children, qualified DBP leaders with outstanding MCH skills who collaborate with multiple disciplines in clinical care, teaching, advocacy, research, and public health are urgently needed.
Goals and Objectives:
Goal 1: To prepare DBP fellows for leadership in DBP. Objective: to train 6 diverse fellows per year in evidence-based clinical care, teaching, research, quality improvement (QI), cultural competence, professionalism, and advocacy with a life course and public health perspective.
Goal 2: To expand community capacity to ensure and improve the access of children and families to the highest quality DBP services. Objectives: each year, the DBPTP program will provide (a) 100 presentations, (b) direct consultation and technical assistance (TA) to 8 community groups, and (c) DBP training for 60-70 long-, medium-, and short-term students. Goal 3: To advance DBP science and improve family-based care for children with DB problems.
Objectives: (a) disseminate 100 research/educational publications and products, and (b) develop 2-4 community-based programs per year. Goal 4: To improve health and eliminate disparities for children with DB problems. Objectives: be involved in at least (a) 4 partnerships with state and local organizations, and (b) 4 HP 2020 objective-promoting activities each year.
Our innovative, intensive curriculum will allow trainees to develop knowledge, skills, and competencies in DBP and MCH leadership through (1) interdisciplinary and individual clinical training experiences in tertiary care and community settings; (2) our comprehensive, learner-centered, interdisciplinary Core Curriculum covering principles of DBP, MCH, teaching, research, leadership, and cultural competence; and (3) interdisciplinary collaborations for technical assistance, consultation, teaching, research, agency partnerships, and community programs to address
HP 2020 objectives.
Evaluation, outcome assessment, and continuous QI are critical components of the D-BPTP program. HP 2020 Objectives: Leading Health Indicators addressed include: access to health care, mental health, and substance abuse. Focus Areas include disability, maternal, infant, and child health, educational/community-based programs, health communication, and public health infrastructure.
We coordinate with local LEAH, LEND, and MCH/Title V programs on projects (eg developmental screening, medical homes, and transition for children with A/DD). Evaluation: MCH Performance Measures; process and outcome evaluation measures for project objectives; structured trainee and faculty evaluations; QI measures.
The D-BPTP trains’ culturally competent, family-centered DBP/MCH leaders with intensive clinical training and research experiences and comprehensive Core Curriculum program that is continually evaluated and improved. We seek to expand community capacity to address HP 2020 objectives and to improve public health services for children with DB problems and their families through education, TA, research, advocacy, and interdisciplinary community and Title V agency partnerships.
