Goals and Objectives for DBP Fellowship Education:
The goal of this fellowship program is to prepare post doctoral fellows in developmental and behavioral pediatrics for teaching, patient care, research and community leadership roles.
At the completion of three years of fellowship training, each fellow will:
Demonstrate a broad and in depth understanding of normal child development, abnormal child development, and children with special health care needs.
Demonstrate competence in elucidating developmental history and evidence of disability through interactions with parents and children.
Demonstrate competence in administering developmental, behavioral, and psychosocial screening techniques.
Demonstrate competence in administration of common psychosocial, developmental, behavioral, functional and neuropsychiatric assessment tools used by developmental and behavioral pediatricians.
Demonstrate competence in the diagnosis and management of a wide range of developmental and behavioral problems experienced by children from birth through adolescence.
Demonstrate competence in behavioral counseling for a wide range of behavioral disorders.
Demonstrate skill in collaborative care and management of children with developmental disabilities or special needs.
Demonstrate knowledge regarding family structure, adoption, foster care.
Demonstrate an understanding of the needs of children at risk, including those in poverty, from fragmented families, and victims of abuse or neglect.
Exhibit a working knowledge of federal, state and local community resources available to support families and foster the development of children.
Demonstrate ability to collaborate with policy and governmental agencies as a consultant and child advocate.
Demonstrate working knowledge of research methods used in developmental and behavioral pediatrics.
Complete a scholarly project in developmental-behavioral pediatrics, present it at a national meeting and submit it for publication,
Demonstrate competence in teaching the concepts of behavioral and developmental pediatrics in multiple settings.
This fellowship provides of the broad variety of clinical experiences in diverse settings based in 4 hospitals and in the community. Fellows can be at different levels of competence and confidence at different times in their training, which likely reflects their experience before and during training in a specific area. When fellows have mastered an aspect of DBP, we try to find ways for them to share their knowledge with others, with student and residents and fellows at lower levels. By the conclusion of their training we want them to be independent in patient management areas, skilled in working in interdisciplinary teams, confident teaching others this knowledge and these skills and competent in implementing program evaluation and independent research.
